As a symbol of Himeji City, another name for Himejijo is "White Heron Castle." The nickname has several background stories. One story came from its white walls covered with white plaster and is in contrast to Okayama Castle with black boarded wall. Other story came from its figure which looks like a white heron spreading its wings. Or another story is that white herons used to live near the castle. |
